Terminal-first reminders

Remember everything, right from your terminal.

Memo is a tiny CLI for capturing reminders without leaving your shell. Add a memo in one line, list it when you need it, and keep everything local.

install
curl -fsSL https://raw.githubusercontent.com/jocampo3/memocli/main/install.sh | bash
No account requiredLocal JSON storageWorks in bash & zsh
Features

Small tool. Zero friction.

Memo does one thing well: it keeps your reminders close to where you already work.

01

Built for the shell

Add, list, and remove memos without breaking your flow. One command is all it takes.

02

Local by default

Memos live in ~/.memocli/global.json on your machine. No accounts, no sync, no cloud.

03

Stays out of your way

A small set of commands, predictable output, and data that survives updates and reinstalls.

Commands

Four commands. That's the whole API.

Add, list, pop, and remove. No flags to memorize, no configuration files to learn.

CommandWhat it does
memo add "text"Add a memo to your list
memo listList all saved memos.
memo popRemove the newest memo.
memo rm <id>Remove a memo by its 10-character ID.
Installation

One command. Then get back to work.

Memo installs to ~/.local/bin. If that directory isn't on yourPATH yet, add it to your shell configuration.

Install Memo

Run the installer from your terminal. It fetches the latest version from GitHub.

install
curl -fsSL https://raw.githubusercontent.com/jocampo3/memocli/main/install.sh | bash

Update your PATH

Add this line to your ~/.bashrc or ~/.zshrc, then restart your terminal or reload your shell configuration.

shell config
export PATH="$HOME/.local/bin:$PATH"
Storage

Your memos stay on your machine.

Memo keeps everything in a single JSON file under your home directory. It is easy to inspect, back up, or move, and it is preserved when Memo is updated or reinstalled.

~/.memocli/global.json
  • Survives updates and reinstalls
  • No account or network required
  • Plain JSON you can read and edit
Maintenance

Update or remove Memo in seconds.

Updating is the same as installing. Uninstalling removes the CLI but leaves your memos untouched.

Updating

Re-run the installation command to install the latest version from GitHub.

update
curl -fsSL https://raw.githubusercontent.com/jocampo3/memocli/main/install.sh | bash

Uninstalling

Remove the installed files. Your existing memos in ~/.memocli/ are intentionally preserved.

uninstall
rm -rf ~/.local/share/memocli
rm -f ~/.local/bin/memo

To remove your memos too, run rm -rf ~/.memocli.

FAQ

Quick answers.

Where are my memos stored?

Memos are stored locally in ~/.memocli/global.json. The file is plain JSON and stays on your machine.

Do I need an account?

No. Memo runs entirely on your machine and does not require an account or network connection to manage your memos.

What happens when I update or reinstall?

Your existing memos are preserved. Re-running the install command only updates the CLI files, not your data.

How do I remove Memo completely?

Delete the installed files with rm -rf ~/.local/share/memocli and rm -f ~/.local/bin/memo. To also remove your saved memos, delete ~/.memocli.

Why does the memo command not work after installing?

~/.local/bin may not be on your PATH. Add export PATH="$HOME/.local/bin:$PATH" to your ~/.bashrc or ~/.zshrc, then restart your terminal.
